I used to think that choosing a favorite Fela album was difficult, not because one stood out from the rest, but because in doing so you're indicating that the others weren't as good. Well, forget about all that. Afrodisiac is it. Better than Gentlemen, Expensive Shit, Zombie, He Miss Road. All of em. No political agenda here, no anger directed anywhere. Just classic hard, heavy Afro-funk, super tight horns, meticulous arrangements, completely indecipherable lyrics and some particularly impressive keyboard work. Fela at his best. i like them all but zombie and confusion/gentlemen might be my favs at the moment
It's worth looking into the backstory of Coffin for Head of State and Unknown Soldier, most of which is avail. on Fela's wikipedia page. Makes those two really come alive.
Check out the 2-fer of this w/ "Open and Close" from '71. Great pairing of Fela albums!
Hard to pick a favorite as there are so many gems. 'Roforofo fight' is another beauty, and you can't go wrong with 'Beasts of No Nation', 'ITT, or most others. I have an easier time figuring out which ones i don't like (very few actually--Live in Amsterdam and the remixed version of 'Army arrangement' were kind of weak). Also there's a nice rare version of "Who Are You" on the latest Soundway comp. and a live version of 'Big Blind Country'is about to be released for the first time.
I agree with my bredren that there are so many good ones that it's hard to settle for one.
This is what I choose tho:
Original Suffer Head / I.T.T.

Very big thanks for that, especially for the possibility to listen to soundclips first (even if Fela Kuti is always worth a buy). Greetz!
