Here Comes Shuggie Otis - 1970

Amazingly only 14 at the time of its recording, Shuggie's Here Comes Shuggie Otis contains all the elements that would later blossom four years later into the magnificent Inspiration Information. Since Inspiration served as an air-tight template for restrained, light as a feather funk, what's most shocking about Here Comes... is not that it's so heavy on baroque pop and psychedelic blues, but that the styles are executed so flawlessly and with such conviction. The instrumental opener "Oxford Grey" brazenly toes the line between dreamy pop, blues and deep funk with its strange mix of harpsichord, heavy horns, slide guitars and strings, the next tune "Jennie Lee" is a taste of lazy psychedelic soul, and the third track "Bootie Cooler" slips cooly into a straight forward uptempo blues augmented with electric pianos and a hyper-Leslied Hammond organ. A truly joyful listen.
